Summary
Clara lives with her sister, Maren, and guardian Auntie. Clara's favorite story Auntie tells is of three orphan infants: Clara, brought by a stork; Maren, who arrived in a seashell; and O'Neill, found beneath an apple tree. When Clara discovers scales under Maren's skin, she realizes Maren is becoming a mermaid. To save her, Clara and O'Neill take her and set out for the sea. Ensnared by evil travelers, they must find a way to escape. Clara wonders, 'if my sister is a mermaid, then what am I?'
